Description

What is Norethisterone?

Norethisterone is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone, widely used to regulate menstrual disorders such as heavy periods, endometriosis, and period delay. By mimicking natural progesterone, Norethisterone helps manage conditions caused by hormonal imbalances. It is often prescribed to delay menstruation for special occasions, trips, or important events where an unexpected period may be inconvenient. Additionally, it is used to treat premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and painful or irregular periods by balancing hormonal fluctuations.

How Does it Work?

Norethisterone works by increasing the levels of progesterone in the body, which prevents the shedding of the uterine lining and stops menstruation from occurring. By maintaining a stable level of progesterone, it helps control bleeding in cases of heavy or prolonged periods and stabilizes the endometrium in women with endometriosis. For period delay, Norethisterone is taken a few days before the expected period to postpone the natural hormonal cycle, thereby preventing menstruation until the desired time.

The drug is not a contraceptive.

Directions

Follow the guidance of your healthcare provider and read the instructions before use:

  • Take Norethisterone three times daily, starting three days before your period is due until you wish your period to resume.
  • Your period should come within two to three days after stopping Norethisterone.
  • Don't use Norethisterone to stop your period once it starts.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless your next tablet is nearly due, in which case skip the missed dose and take the following amount at the regular time.
  • For heavy periods or endometriosis, Norethisterone may be taken daily for extended periods (up to 6 months), usually at a dose of 5mg two to three times a day. It helps reduce endometrial growth and minimize painful symptoms. Follow the dosage prescribed by your healthcare provider.
